Naval Training Center Redevelopment

Orlando, Florida

In designing this new town on the site of the former Orlando Naval Training Center, it was important to develop a street grid system, parks, block types and unit types which would complement the existing town master plan. Design invention transforms housing types traditional to the American south, such as the Charleston House, into a variety of new prototypes that satisfy demands of the contemporary marketplace. New types include rowhouses, a variety of plex products and garden apartments. The assemblage of the housing types into neighborhoods addresses critical urban design problems, such as turning street corners or providing parking internal to the block. Rich faade design creates a variety and stylistic identity that will contribute to a powerful sense of place in the new town. Torti Gallas is working on two parcels - a 55 acre piece which will contain 1,200 housing units, and the Town Center, which will contain 300,000 SF of retail and another 1,200 housing units in a mix of for-sale, loft, rental, townhouse and manor house units.
