Artery Plaza

Bethesda, MD

Bethesda, Maryland

The goals in designing this urban office building were twofold: to bring resolution to the two geometries of the site - the orthogonal grid of the city and the diagonal grid of Wisconsin Avenue coming from Washington, D.C. (L’Enfant’s original plan), and to bring the mass of the office building down to a pedestrian scale. These goals were achieved through a juxtaposition of two materials (curtain wall and precast), a juxtaposition of the two geometries, and the insertion of a 64 foot pedestrian square contained within 1-3 story architectural elements, including a water fountain, a walkway and several works of art which serve as focal points of the loggia.
