Courtyard Homes at Asbury North Village

The new Asbury Courtyard Homes are an addition to The Asbury Village Retirement Community which has been serving senior residents in the Washington, DC metropolitan area for 85 years. Over the years, the campus has evolved into its current built environment with more than 700 apartments, 74 villas, administrative buildings and a health care center. This 10.7 acre development area is part of the 135 acre campus surrounded by private townhouse developments on all sides, and a regional shopping center to the northwest.

The campus embodies different size senior living options ranging in size from studios to 3 bedrooms and building types from high rise apartments to single family homes. Asbury Courtyard Homes, in this spectrum, fills in a critical gap. Its forty-three (43) semi-detached housing units bridge the spatial qualities of a single family house with the vibrant density of a townhouse development. Inspired by the neighboring communities, craftsman and colonial architectural styles were utilized. Each individual residence features two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a den, with sizes ranging between 1,685 to 1,923 square feet.

The interior design was meticulously studied with the assumption that the residents would spend more time indoors at this phase of their life. The homes’ high window heights and transoms provide abundant natural light.

Other features include a great room with optional fireplace, an eat-in gourmet kitchen, separate laundry room, ample storage space and a rear-facing two-car garage. All the cabinetry and shelving of the kitchen, bathroom and laundry rooms have been chosen to maximize efficiency and ease of use; similar to a custom home design.

An outdoor courtyard and a charming front porch also provide a connection to nature and to the community. A central triangular park for residents was also created by facing houses onto the street. The salvaged landscaping from the original garden was reused in this new green space.
