The 407 Edge City Express (ECE) presents Ontario with an unprecedented opportunity to strengthen its communities and improve mobility for people throughout the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The 102km ECE project would be the largest transportation infrastructure investment in Ontario’s history and would be self-sustaining. It is projected to carry up to 150 million passengers annually by 2041. Ultimately, the electrically powered high-speed trains will link edge cities across the GTA from Oshawa to Milton, providing a new sustainable transportation choice facilitating long term mobility, supporting Ontario’s smart growth initiatives, and providing $300-$500 billion of economic growth over that time period.
Many of the stations are located in the heart of or near downtowns in some of Ontario’s major cities’ edges, minimizing potential impacts on the environment and maximizing connectivity with other modes. The infrastructure network is critical for a sustainable future for the entire region and transit-supportive land use such as Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), which focuses on sustainable design principles, becomes increasingly more important in planning and designing transit centers and station areas. This document is intended to project a vision for the 407 Edge City Express and the future placemaking and smart growth opportunities at the station areas associated with the rail.
