Project Description

The nearly vacant buildings of the 1940’s Williston Apartments stood blocks from prestigious Howard University and contributed to the blighted neighborhood conditions. Flat roofs, deteriorating masonry, broken doors, dirt alleys, tiny rooms and a bare, hard court defined the place. After years of funding challenges and a fire which further destroyed the interior, construction finally began in 2009.

The reimagined design extended the parapets and added a bracketed pitched roof to redefine the proportions of the buildings. The courtyard was reconfigured with new landscaping and a formal central garden. The project is finally a quiet gem of light for the community.
