The Waverly Avenue Streetscape study transforms a commercial corridor into a welcoming gateway to downtown Patchogue. Engaged by Suffolk County and the Village of Patchogue, TG+P developed Streetscape Concepts & Guidelines for a half-mile stretch of the avenue, bringing together bicycle connections, an enhanced pedestrian environment, and an inviting streetscape. The concepts begin by reimagining the roadway, with restriping alternatives that introduce a two-way cycle track while maintaining the existing number of travel lanes, complemented by bump-outs at select intersections.
Between the curb and the right-of-way, the design combines planting, furnishings, and transit amenities to create a welcoming public realm. It adds trees along one side of the avenue and proposes a strategy to fund new trees on private property close to the power lines. The study defines styles and locations for light poles, banners, hanging planters, and benches, giving the corridor a cohesive character, and envisions bus stops with shelters, benches, lighting, and elevated platforms that accommodate the cycle track. Putting the pedestrian first, the concepts also minimize street-facing surface parking and offer screening options for existing lots—supporting a more walkable corridor.
A corner site illustrates how a new open space can be configured along the avenue. Together, these concepts chart a practical path toward a more connected Waverly Avenue, closing a missing link in the bicycle network, transforming the pedestrian experience with a focus on comfort and safety, and showing how individual property redevelopments can contribute to a walkable corridor. Grounded in realizable, implementation-focused recommendations, the vision pairs an ambitious transformation with a clear commitment to making it achievable.
